Day 2993
I tried picturing
how the cold moves ‘cross the land,
and the heat retreats

Day 2992
we sat together,
nervous, because to decide,
would then mean, to act.

Day 2991

we all took our turn –
stepping onstage, mic in hand,
and singing our dreams

Troy’s Book Club: Heroes In The Night

December 20, 2013

The full title of this book by Tea Krulos is “Heroes In The Night: Inside the Real Life Superhero Movement.” I imagine that most comic-book readers have wondered what it would be like to be the heroes they read about. In this book, the reader gets an “on the ground” view of what that might be like.

Tea spends a lot of time with a variety of real-life super-heroes, or RSLH, as they’re commonly known. You have to wonder what makes someone really, for real, put on a costume and go out looking for bad situations to get involved with. The spectrum of motivation seems to run between good-hearted idealism to tenuous-grasp-on-reality. There’s no doubt that the people Tea profiles want to do good, but when you really get down to it, a costume hardly seems the best way to do that. Still, for many people, that is the route they take. What is neat, is that for the better-balanced individuals, they do find a way to be “heroic” – and that often includes helping the homeless, organizing food and toy drives, and being a fun, “look out for each other” presence in their neighborhoods.

The book also has a pretty neat angle for me, as the author lives in the same area of Milwaukee as I do, and he spends a fair amount of time with a Milwaukee RLSH named The Watchman. 🙂

The book was a pretty quick read, has many photos of the RLSH, and does a fair job of examining these people. Tea seems to keep a pretty objective view of these people and their exploits. Whether or not you’re a fan of comic-books, this would be a worthwhile read!

To learn more about Tea’s adventures with the RLSH, check his website here. Darn it, I just missed the Challenger’s Toy Drive last week!

And, to buy the book, visit my favorite local bookstore, Boswell Books!

letting go is hard.
that’s what I’ve learned these two years;
I’ve got to move on.

I don’t care to think
about what my answer’d be:
“Which heartbreak hurt most?”

that star’s far away,
but on this clear, cold Thursday,
I can feel its warmth
